Pediatric Eye Exams

Pediatric Eye Exams

Regular eye exams are important for children since their eyes can change significantly in as little as a year as the muscles and tissue develop. Good eyesight is critical for a child’s life and achievements since success in school is closely tied to eye health. School demands intense visual involvement, including reading, writing, using computers, and blackboard/smartboard work. Even physical activities and sports require strong vision. If their eyes aren’t up to the task, a child may feel tired, have trouble concentrating, have problems in school or have difficulty playing their favorite games which may affect their overall quality of life.

When to Perform a Pediatric Eye Exam?

City Eye recommends annual exams starting at age 5

There are some signs that parents can tell if their child has a vision problem. For example, the child may squint, hold reading materials very close to their face, or complain about things appearing blurry. However, there are some less obvious signs that may indicate vision problems, such as having a short attention span, quickly losing interest in games, projects or activities that require using their eyes for an extended period of time, or losing their place when reading. As well as choosing to avoid reading, drawing, playing games or doing other projects that require focusing up close. Another sign is that a child may turn his or her head to the side when looking at something in front of them. This may be a sign of a refractive error, including astigmatism, so by turning their head helps the child see better.

That’s why it is so important for kids to have regular eye screenings with an optometrist. The earlier a vision problem is found and treated, the better off your child will be in and out of school.

Myopia Management

These contacts slow the progression of myopia in children between the ages of eight and 12. Even more exciting, they slow the progression by as much as 59%. For instance, if an ophthalmologist or optometrist diagnoses a child with nearsightedness and predicts a diopter of -8.00, MiSight contact lenses can reduce that to about -3.50.

As the only contact lens on the market capable of doing this, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) fully approved them in 2019.

Another benefit of wearing MiSight contacts over traditional lenses is their soft lens. Especially for younger wearers, they provide optimal comfort.

Also, an individual only wears them once before discarding them. It’s important to note that these contacts aren’t made for overnight wear. For that reason, users need to remove them from the eyes and discard them at the end of each day.

Stellest Lenses

Stellest lenses are a groundbreaking innovation in myopia control, developed by Essilor. They look like regular eyeglass lenses but are designed with specialized optical technology to both correct vision and slow the progression of myopia.

Advantages of Stellest Lenses

  • Non-invasive and easy to adapt: Unlike contact lenses or daily eye drops, Stellest lenses are worn just like regular glasses - no insertion or maintenance routines are required. This makes them ideal for younger children or those not ready for contact lens wear.

  • Scientifically proven results: Clinical studies show that Stellest lenses can slow myopia progression by up to 67% compared to standard single-vision lenses when worn consistently.

  • Continuous vision correction and control: Children receive clear, comfortable vision while their myopia management treatment is active all day long - no need to switch between different products.

  • Great for children unsuited for other options: Some children may not be candidates for orthokeratology (Ortho-K), soft myopia control contact lenses like MiSight, or low-dose atropine eye drops due to comfort, allergies, or other limitations. Stellest lenses offer a safe and effective alternative for these patients.
